Japanese Maples, The Dwarf Acers
I have been known to rant about how people should try to include more native plants in their garden. However, I would never dissuade someone from including a Japanese maple in your garden, on the contrary, I would I recommend warmly.
History and color
The image of a Japanese maple in full leaf brings to my mind images of oriental calm, always water and mountains covered with moss. This elegant plant is a separate part of the culture and consciousness of his native Japan through its use in horticulture and art. In the year 1800, more than 200 varieties of this plant have been recorded in Japan, this figure has increased over the Next 100 years, only to have these figures struck again to 200 by the maelstrom of World War II. Japanese maples also known as Acer palmatum and Acer japonicum are diminutive in stature compared to other trees. Heights off 1 meter to 7 meters, leading many gardeners to class such as large shrubs rather than small trees. Words can not do justice to the color displayed by a Japanese maple, but must be seen to be believed. An owner Acer will experience new growth late in spring, the foliage was calm and even autumn leaves fierier cold.
Palmate or Dissectum
There are two main groups of Japanese maple. The "webbed" group has the habit of growth reasonably upright with layered branches and leaves which consist of five to nine lobes. The "Dissectum" group rightly saw his name with dissected lobed leaves, birds and lace. I feel that the maples in the "Dissectum" group look particularly well if are planted near a feature of informal water mainly because of their tears, the cascade form.
How to Acer grow a dwarf
Japanese maples do well if planted in one aspect is in front, allowing access to the morning sun and protect the midday sun. Shelter against the winds and wet soil but the soil is permeable also important requirements of culture. A layer of 7 cm of bark mulch applied to the base of plants will help prevent the plant drying out. To ensure good growth, you must feed your little piece of the Orient, apply a liquid fertilizer in mid-spring and again in mid-summer to half strength. As these Acers are shallow rooted, they are ideal for planting shrubs among others without checking to growth. For a delicious oriental scene, try planting Acer palmatum with rhododendrons, azaleas, bamboo and birch.
Specimens for the pot
Two beautiful specimen maples whose leaves are opening in the center Gardening is now "Orange Dream" and "Beni Maiko. "Orange Dream" is worth mentioning because of its fresh yellow / green lobed leaves. The youth councils in growth have an orange glow, providing an interesting contrast. "Beni Maiko" on the other hand produces foliage beautiful pink in spring turning to dark red in summer. Both these Acers up to about 1 meter high, an ideal size for the pot. If you decide to grow a Japanese maple in a container, try to select one that supports inheritance for plants, an enamelled saucepan oriental style would be ideal.
what happened to my Japanese Maple?
I have a Japanese maple that has grown about 3 years now and is doing well, but this year it was like death, but now he has leaves growing from the bottom up is bare. What has caused this and should I prune the top to fall? I have a maturity that is past of what happened and I let him develop. One middle-aged beauty is great and I never do anything for her.
If a Japanese maple get too little water leaves wither and fall. The tree is usually recover. If they get too much water the leaves dry out and will not fall. Then, the tree is a Goner and will not recover. If you get some growth, then the tree will probably recover, discovering more of what caused it. I would give him a year to recover, and then see where the members are dead and then prune. I just lost a 15 year old J Maple to too much water (very wet spring.)
