Vermiculite is kind of a dull gold color. Pearlite (perlite) is a white rocklike stuff similar to pumice. It’s very light. Both are used to loosen up soil. Both produce dust that is very harmful to breathe. Keep it wet. Worm castings is worm “poop” and is what you get from letting worms digest high grade compost.
with all the rain we have in new york this year we are having a great season!!!! Lots of things exploding!
Sorry sweetmaidx. The first commenter is correct. Vermiculite is from mica rock, not worms (worm poop is called “castings”). In fact if you live in an old house you may even find vermiculite used as insulation above your ceiling in the attic. Anyway, check google for more information.
vermiculite (unless I’m wrong) is worm poop. It is a natural fertalizer, helps prevent weed growing, and puts loads of good microbodies back into the soil. If you have a worm bin its also a good way to recycle your organic kitchen waste.
er are you sure?
I’m fairly sure vermiculite is worm poop. You can either ‘harvest’ your own from having a worm bin or find someone who sells it
Vermiculite is from mined mica rock. It holds a lot of water and still keeps the soil loose so plants can grow more easily.

Okay, this is my first year gardening and composting. I’m really enjoying your videos. I hate to try to put more work on your plate, but couldn’t you do a video about every two weeks? And how do you feel about taking questions from some of your viewers? As a new gardener, I’ve got plenty of questions that I think you could answer.
You know me Patti, I am a HUGE fan of compost and the great results it can add to the garden.
And by the way, your garden is absolutely amazing! What you lack in growing season, you make up for in quality, style and function.
